USCIS Procedural Updates for OPT/STEM Applicants

There have been some possible changes in USCIS procedure for Post Completion OPT and STEM OPT processes.

USCIS In-Person Visits

There have been reports that in some areas of the U.S., students with pending OPT or STEM applications and/or on active authorization periods have received in-person visits from a USCIS agent at their home or workplace. Reports have indicated that the agents primarily ask questions to verify the information of an applicant’s immigration record history. If you are approached by a USCIS agent, do not panic, and take the following steps:

  • First ask to see an ID or badge identifying them as a USCIS employee before disclosing any private information
  • Answer their questions accurately and honestly, and provide any documentation that is requested
  • Contact the ISSO after the visit by submitting an Ask an Advisor form in iComet, and provide details about the questions asked by the USCIS agent

Phone Calls

There are no reports of these USCIS verifications occurring solely via phone call. Phone calls may be made by scammers who are seeking to obtain information from you. If you receive a call, be skeptical. Let them know you are concerned that they may be a scammer and may verify information that they provide to you, but do not provide them with any information that they do not already have.

Biometric Appointments

USCIS has always had the discretion to request biometric appointments for OPT and STEM OPT applicants. While in the past this type of request was rare, some reports indicate there may be an increase in biometric appointment requests for OPT and STEM OPT applicants at this time.

  • If USCIS determines biometrics are needed for your application, you may receive an RFE (Request for Evidence) to notify you
  • Follow the instructions in the RFE, which should include an additional notice with a pre-scheduled date, time and location for the biometrics appointment
  • You will need to attend the appointment as scheduled to continue processing of your OPT/STEM application
