Assistantship and Scholarship Documents
International students applying for an F-1 visa must provide proof of funds for one academic year to receive their Form I-20 request. For more information on the minimum amounts students must show for the I-20, visit the ISSO Estimate Expenses.
Academic departments sponsoring international students with an assistantship or a scholarship can support the I-20 issuance process by submitting a completed UT Dallas Assistantship Affidavit Form that contains details of the award to ISSODocuments@utdallas.edu. A copy of the award letter is not required.
This memo is used by the ISSO for I-20 issuance purposes only. This memo does not replace an official award letter from the academic department which the student may be required to present at the U.S. Consulate as part of the visa process.
For Scholarships the memo must:
- Be on the academic department letterhead
- Be dated
- Mention the name of the scholarship
- Mention the amount of the scholarship
- Mention for which semester(s) and year the scholarship is being awarded
- Full name and ID of the student being awarded the scholarship
- Be signed by the academic representative. That is the person who would sign off on an official scholarship letter.
For Assistantships the memo must:
- Be on the academic department letterhead
- Be dated
- Mention the following details on the assistantship
- The monthly stipend
- Semester(s) and year the assistantship is effective
- Whether it includes a tuition waiver per each term of the assistantship
- Number of credit hours the tuition waiver applies per term
- List full name and ID(s) of the student(s) being offered the assistantship
- Be signed by the academic representative. That is the person who would sign off on an official assistantship letter.
If the academic department wants to pick-up the I-20s from the ISSO. Include that request in the memo, along with the full name, UT Dallas e-mail address and phone number of the person who is authorized to pick them up. When the I-20s are ready, this person will be notified.
Submit the memo to the ISSO.
